In our classes, Tlicho Yati is taught and students learn to speak basic words and conversational phrases. They also develop skills that are connected to Aboriginal culture, like beading, drumming, setting snares, etc. Although Aboriginal culture and language are rooted in tradition, our students learn how to use Aboriginal language in today’s world as well. New technology is used at MHS to teach language, like the SMART board and Aboriginal Language applications on the iPads. Our ALC and Dene Laws programs provide all students with a 'sense of place'. They understand that they are living in the north -- a special place that is distinct and unique.

The students and staff at Mildred Hall School are proud to have been chosen as an Indigo Love of Reading Foundation School. We promote Mildred Hall School in this way on our school website, newsletter, school promotions, etc. As new books come in, our student’s eyes light up. Our goal of increased literacy involves extensive planning so that we spend the money effectively, keeping in mind the best interests and needs of the students. The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation Grant has enabled our school to support literacy initiatives through the purchase of books and educational resources as well as events and activities promoting literacy. We have created a Mildred Hall School Wall of Fame to celebrate past and present Mildred Hall School staff and students who have excelled in various fields. Our school has enriched our school library, increased classroom library resources with the selection of 'just right' books for students, and provided books for students to add or start personal libraries at home. The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation Grant has inspired a love of reading at Mildred Hall School!
