Starting last January, a new program was introduced. It is called Histoires en action. It’s an interactive program that is based on language acquisition through gestures and actions. Students from Grade 3 to Grade 8 have been showing steady progress and they are getting ready to be in a play called “Les trois petits cochons”. They are expected to perform in class during the second week of June.

In addition to the new program, students have participated in many exciting activities:

  • Carnaval d’hiver
  • Photographie
  • Scrapbooking
  • Camping
  • Cuisine (poutine, crêpes, pain doré)
  • Tintamarre
  • Festival du Film Francophone

Music

Music at MHS – A Harmonic Place to Be!

At MHS all students participate in the music program. They have lots of opportunities to learn about music. They can sing, dance, read, write, learn various instruments, listen to various styles of music and perform for each other and their families.

K-2 students learn how to play rhythm instruments such as xylophones, sticks, shakers and blocks. Grades 3-5 children learn how to play three part harmony on recorders, and the Grades 6-8 learn how to play band instruments.

Of course, all students once they enter grade three, are always welcome to join the choir. This choir participates in many community and school performances and has a superb professional reputation.

Other specialized programs include the keyboarding option where students in grades 6-8 learn how to play a keyboard, and outside of the music room, several other staff members offer guitar lessons as extracurricular clubs.

Program Support

Given the diversity of students within a classroom, a teacher will need to provide a variety of instruction to meet the learning needs of their students. Program Support refers to a collaborative approach of interacting with classroom teachers to help them determine learning outcomes and deliver appropriate supports if needed, to their students. This team may include parents and other educational staff involved in the student’s program.

Program SupportAt Mildred Hall School, teachers are involved in study groups or learning communities. Teachers meet to study best practice in education and to share their wealth of knowledge with one another on how to adapt their methodology, materials, teaching environment, etc. to meet the programming needs of their students.

Program SupportOther supports may include such things as: additional support personnel for specific periods of the day, transportation or special equipment. Student Support Plans and Individual Education Plans are written for some students, with their strengths and challenges being considered for goal setting.
